Forensic dentistry is gaining popularity in India and the Middle-East due to the lack of qualified forensic dentists in the country. Forensic Odontology is used for: identification of unknown human remains, assessment of cases of abuse, assessment of bite-mark injuries, age-estimation. The important utility of Forensic Odontology is the identification of the victims of mass disasters using the teeth and dental records.
“There are less than 10 qualified forensic dentistry experts in India. All those who wish to take it up are forced to study outside the country to learn its nitty-gritties,” says Dr. Acharya, secretary of the Indian Association of Forensic Odontology.
Today, only a very small number of dentists in India have got a formal training in forensic odontology. This science is also uses widely to identify an assailant by comparing a record of their dentition (set of teeth) with a record of a bite mark left on a victim. Bite-mark analysis carries much importance as bite-marks are very commonly spotted in the cases related to sexual assaults and child abuse.
This science also uses in health field. By studying one’s tooth enamel, experts can find out the health status of that person.
According to various web resources- a forensic dentist can earn a daily wage of $2,000 or as much as $150,000 a year when hired as a full-time forensic dentist.
